Audio-Visual Guide to St. Stephan complete with Photos, Videos & Audio Texts

The first thing that strikes everyone is the light: the remarkable blue light in St. Stephan. Every year, around 200,000 visitors visit this Catholic parish church, situated high above the medieval town centre of Mainz, in order to see the windows designed by world-famous artist Marc Chagall.

Now, a new audio-visual guide offers a unique experience when encountering these spectacular works of art. In addition to close-ups of each window, the guide provides spiritual interpretations of the stained-glass motifs which centre around stories based on the Old Testament.

Visitors can enjoy a video from 1978 showing how the first window made its way from the painter’s studio in southern France to the church of St. Stephan in Mainz. They can also listen to the many different sounds of the church’s Klais organ or view a wide range of photos illustrating the church’s 1,000-year-old history. That starts  in the Middle Ages and continues until the destruction in WW II, culminating in the acquisition of the Chagall windows that bathe St. Stephan in an intense blue light.
